Elon Musk’s xAI Moves Grok Image Generation Behind Paywall Amid Controversy

Elon Musk’s xAI Restricts Grok Image Generation to Paid Users Amid Controversy

Elon
Musk’s AI startup xAI has limited its Grok image generation tool to paid subscribers following widespread criticism over sexually explicit AI-generated content. The decision comes just a week after the platform faced scrutiny for producing unauthorized sexualized images of women and children.

Grok allowed users to create new images or modify existing ones, which led to a surge of semi-nude and sexualized content circulating online. The rapid proliferation of such content prompted European authorities to raise immediate concerns.

German media minister Wolfram Weimer condemned the trend as the “industrialization of sexual harassment,” a phrase widely quoted across European outlets. The European Commission described the material as illegal, while the UK’s data protection regulator demanded clarity on how xAI plans to comply with privacy and content laws, particularly regarding abusive images targeting women.

By the end of last week, Grok began notifying users that image generation and editing are now accessible only through a subscription. Journalists testing the change found the bot refusing to create explicit images, confirming the new paywall restrictions.

However, the standalone Grok app continues to allow free image creation, raising questions about the consistency of xAI’s enforcement across platforms. In response to inquiries, xAI provided a brief statement labeling media reports as “Legacy Media Lies,” declining further comment.

Musk had previously warned users that producing illegal content through Grok would carry the same liability as uploading it personally. Despite these warnings, regulatory authorities remain concerned, with European oversight showing no signs of abating.

The episode underscores the challenges facing generative AI tools: while rapid growth brings popularity, it also invites regulatory and ethical accountability. Although Grok’s free functionality is now restricted, the spotlight on AI content moderation is intensifying.
